Join Emily Tripp, Occupational Therapist and Certified Coach Approach in Healthcare, as she introduces the Coach Approach as an effective method for supporting young adults with intellectual disabilities as they navigate postsecondary transitions. Grounded in the International Coaching Federation’s core competencies and emerging evidence from inclusive postsecondary education (IPSE) programs, the session integrates research findings with practical application. Participants will observe a real coaching session, explore how coaching fosters self-determination and meaningful goal exploration, and learn two core coaching techniques—Powerful Questions and Active Listening. Through guided reflection and a digital workbook, learners will connect these techniques to their own professional roles and consider how a Coach Approach can amplify client voice, build autonomy, and support successful transition outcomes.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify the benefits of using a Coach Approach to support young adults with intellectual disabilities during postsecondary transitions.
- Describe two core coaching techniques that enhance client engagement, self-determination, and goal exploration.
- Recognize how a Coach Approach fosters autonomy, participation, and capacity building for young adults within intellectual disabilities in educational and community settings.
